Last Saturday Sam and I visited the Broadstairs Food Festival that I had been hearing about for a few weeks from the girls at work. The free 3-day event started on 30th September, ending on 2nd October. The popular food festival has been running successfully for 8 years now and features a range of Thanet and Kentish foods to tickle your taste buds including cheese, meats, artisan breads, pickles, cakes, pastries and plenty of alcoholic beverages to wash it all down with. The event saw over 100 stalls showcasing their produce and delighting audiences of all ages with the finest food and drink that Kent could offer. There were plenty of treats to entertain all the family and Sam got stuck in it from the get-go. He set his sights on the kebab stall within seconds and anyone who knows Sam, they know he’s a huge fan of kebabs, much to my dismay!
Whilst he was tucking away into his meat feast, I poked around at the stall next door, The Garlic Farm. If, like me, you need to get ready for Christmas early just in case a little one arrives early, finding the perfect Christmas present can be a tough job, especially if you have no clue 2 months before! Whilst having a nosey, I found some great little treats for my mum’s Christmas present and tried a cracker or two with an a dabble of garlic or chilli on it. Ooooh! Spicy!
Having a wander around the stalls, I found some extra little things for Mum’s Christmas present, a little treat for my Grandad’s Christmas present and plenty of treats for us along the way too. Whilst nibbling away on a giant chocolate cookie, Sam spotted the one stall I wasn’t keen on going anywhere near but he bought from there anyway, with great interest and enthusiasm, The Stour Valley Game staff. If you haven’t heard of this company yet, you will if you’re an active festival or foodie enthusiast. The independent retailers have won awards supplying restaurants, traders and the public with their selection of interesting produce. If you’re looking for something a little different and like to experiment, then check these guys out. Their game is available as joints, steaks, mince, sausages, burgers, offal, dice and mixed game – great for pies! Sam’s chosen Duck and Squirrel this time and don’t worry, I won’t be trying either.
The festival was set in Victoria Gardens, just by the bandstand, overlooking the sea, with a pop-up restaurant, food trail and cookery demonstration theatre where tickets had to be bought beforehand. If I have time I will definitely want to go again and will come better prepared in the clothing department – it was a little too muddy for my Uggs, wellies next time for sure!
