With Christmas, just around the corner, those new mum’s who’ve just given birth and are breastfeeding may be craving a cocktail, a glass of sherry, some baileys (like me!) or a glass of mulled wine but know that unfortunately they can’t consume any alcohol because of their baby. But no fear, there’s fortunately a few options available to keep you refreshed and part of the Christmas spirit without getting sloshed. Think of the morning after and the no hangovers plaguing your mind, body and soul – bonus!
Decaf Iced Tea
If you love tea, you’ll love this idea. You can make this great drink two ways, the lazy way – buy it or make your own.
Lazy way: Buy from T2, Whittards or selected retail stories.
Make it: Brew it your way, light or strong, unsweetened or sweetened, this is completely up to you how you’d like it. Lipton’s say ‘Pour four cups of boiling water over two teabags into a heat-proof pitcher and leave for three to five minutes. Remove the teabags, and sweeten to taste by adding a little sugar. Stir in six cups of ice cubes until melted, or use four cups of cold water. Add in freshly cut lemon slices for some citrus zing, and keep refrigerated. ‘
Mocktails
The Virgin Mary
200ml tomato juice
2 spring onions, chopped
Juice of one lemon
Half a teaspoon of Tabasco
Half a teaspoon of Worcestershire sauce
Half a teaspoon of celery salt
Freshly ground black pepper
Ice cubes
1 tablespoon chives
Put all the ingredients except the pepper and chives into a cocktail shaker with the ice cubes and shake well to blend; alternatively, put into an electric blender.
Pour into a tall glass, add a celery stick and a good grind of pepper on the top, then sprinkle with the chives.
Spiced Cider Punch
2 quarts of apple juice, divided
1 cup sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground allspice
1 can (12 oz) orange juice concentrate, thawed
1 quart chilled ginger ale
In a large pot, combine 1 cup of the cider, the sugar, cinnamon and allspice. Cook, stirring, until the sugar has dissolved. Add in the orange juice concentrate and the remaining apple cider. Refrigerate until cold.
Before serving, stir the ginger ale into the cider mix. Serve cold.
Virgin Strawberry Daiquiri
2 strawberries
100g sugar
1 tablespoon lemon juice
160ml lemon and lime soda
Ice
Blend all of the ingredients together and simply pour into a decorative glass with a dash of cream if you fancy.
