It’s that time of year, when a warm fire and a big bowl of comfort food is hearty, rich and comforting. And when it comes to Sunday lunch, us Brit’s don’t like to muck around. If it’s Sunday lunch, there really is little excuse on a Sunday for anything else but a Sunday Roast. We usually stay in on a Sunday and have a roast at home, because, let’s face it, nowhere does quite as good as home, but on the odd occasion that we do venture out, we don’t always go for a roast. Sometimes a Sunday roast isn’t that good or it’s through-the-roof expensive. Today is different though, today we went to one of our locals, The Wheatsheaf in St Lawrence. This little corner pub is run by Simon & Sharon and it a very family-orientated business.
The Wheatscheaf | 17 High Street, Ramsgate | Sunday roasts from 1-3pm (must pre-book)
Owned by Simon and his wife Sharon, this family friendly pub sits on the corner of the high street of St Lawrence, serving alcohol and food at excellent value. And I’m not kidding, excellent value means excellent value. Their Sunday roasts are a huge hit if you do know about them. For just £5 you get a 3-course meal that consists of a starter of soup and a crusty roll, your main Sunday lunch, with 3 meats to choose from, with all the trimmings and lashings of gravy and a dessert. Children’s 3-course Sunday lunch is a quid less. I decided on pork, Jane had beef and Sam had beef and gammon.
Starter – minestrone soup with a crusty roll
Main – choose from 3 meats. Roast potatoes, vegetables, Yorkshire pudding and lashings of gravy.
Dessert – jam roly poly, chocolate gateaux, or fruit and ice cream.
Adult: £5 pp
Child: £4 pp
Served Sunday from 1pm – 3pm. Book in advance, call 01843 588088.
After a yummy lunch, sitting at home now writing this post, all I want to do is join Emily and sleep. Lunch was lovely and just the right amount, although next time I might skip on soup. For a fiver, you really can’t go wrong, but I’m not joking when I say book in advance. They only do this great lunchtime deal on a Sunday from 1-3pm and for those who know about their great food offer, rush in and book week in and week out.
Try and get there on time too as Sharon likes to stick to a schedule to keep up with the demand.
