Back in the day, American sitcom Will and Grace, was groundbreaking- it was witty, cheeky, silly and dived in places that most were to scared to go to. The hit TV series, constantly nominated but never winning awards, took the world by storm, but it didn’t matter, they had their millions of followers, from afar, who loved Will or Grace, or Jack and or Karen. For 11 years, they captured their audience with their humour, adding characters we grew to love or hate and never seeing Karen’s poor husband who had to put up with her alcoholic and witty charm. When the series ended, few were upset, but it was left at that and no one really bothered to mention a reunion. There’s always been talks for a Friends reunion, or Gilmore Girls or to bring back some sitcoms, but usually, even though the ending can disappoint some, there’s usually a good reason why it’s ended and not coming back.
Last year, there was a lot of talk that Will & Grace was returning. Hey, you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, but it was just hard to, because after all these years, 10 years in actual fact, the rebooted season was terrible. There were little laughs, although the fake American laughter track in the background, told you all you needed to know as to what is and was funny. The problem is it’s trying to hard. Every episode, now aired on Channel 5 instead of Channel 4, tries so ridiculously hard to be current. Karen, who always was my favourite, is now old buddy old pals with Trump and Melania, Jack, another favourite, is now on Grindr, which lets be honest, he wouldn’t have ever done on the original series, Grace is surprisingly more annoying than ever, and what’s with Will kissing ass as the lawyer who is pointing towards the 45th president? All of them have some weird connection to Trump and it’s odd, seriously odd. It’s not political so you don’t need to worry about that, but there doesn’t seem to be much of a connection between them all now and the jokes, if you can even call the, that, lack that laugh-factor, if you know what I mean?
I just think it’s a shame that they’ve tried so hard and failed to do what they do successfully did in the past. Somethings should be left untouched and this I’m afraid, is definitely one of them. Sorry guys, I loved the original, I promise!
