A Buffy reboot? I’m not sure how I feel about this.

Throughout my teenage years Buffy the Vampire Slayer was my life. For seven seasons I watched Buffy Summers grow up, find herself, find love, kill love and slay. It was a huge part of my life. My nerdy teens was captivated by Buffy and her gang fighting against the evils that lurked at night. There was only one Buffy, one Giles, one Willow, one Xander, one Angel, one Cordelia, one Spike, even one Tara and I hated Tara.

One, not two, one. But it seems tv producers think this can change because times have changed so much since the 90’s tv series was on our screens. So much so Fox dropped a bombshell that a new Buffy the Vampire Slayer was in the works, this time starring a black woman in the lead role. But show runner Monica Owusu-Breen has made a statement which sounds like it’s not going to be anything like the original series, which is confusing. In a statement posted to Twitter, Owusu-Breen touched on her own personal history with the Buffy TV series, before addressing that the new show will introduce a new slayer.

“For some genre writers it’s Star Wars. Buffy the Vampire Slayer is my Star Wars. Before I became a writer, I was a fan,” Owusu-Breen wrote. “For seven seasons, I watched Buffy Summers grow up, find love, kill that love. I watched her fight, and struggle and slay,” she wrote. “There is only one Buffy. One Xander, one Willow, Giles, Cordelia, Oz, Tara, Kendra, Faith, Spike, Angel … They can’t be replaced. Joss Whedon’s brilliant and beautiful series can’t be replicated. I wouldn’t try to. But here we are, 20 years later … and the world seems a lot scarier. So maybe, it could be time to meet a new Slayer … And that’s all I can say.”

No, just not good enough. I’m not sure if anyone will agree, but usually great originals are ruined by not-that great reboots. Ok, so technically I’m talking about movies, but still, why ruin something original and great?

If, if, if they did a spin off then I could maybe deal with this but a reboot, nope, I’m not happy about that. I mean they could just call it something different. Because let’s get real for a second, in the sense of fiction, Buffy wasn’t the only Vampire Slayer. She may have been the chosen one, but even she died and rose from the dead. There was Faith Leanne and Kendra Young, so they could just not name it Buffy and call it something different, which I probably will moan about on here when it comes out, but don’t take Buffy’s legendary series and fuck it up because I know you will – Fox Networks I’m pointing at you. It might be good, but I really hope whatever success that comes out of it isn’t because they overtook what was a brilliant show and shat all over it to make this one.

Still not happy.

It really is.
