What is it with us and hospitals recently?
Last month, Emily was rushed to hospital with a high temperature and suspected sepsis of the lung, that thankfully was just a chest infection. But still a terrifying 13 hours.
Roll on a few weeks, and I was in Deal’s minor injuries unit for my eye for my birthday. Don’t laugh but it looked like someone has stabbed me in the eyeball.
It was sore, really sore, red and pretty gross. Honestly, my birthday was mainly me trying to open my eye without itching it out and I looked like something out of a slapstick horror movie.
It was a sight for sure. Thankfully a few days after my birthday, my friend Emma drove me to Deal’s Minor OutPatients unit, for my eye check and so Emily and her two boys could run stress free in the park.
But my eye is back to normal and I’m pleased.
I had viral conjunctivitis. Who even knew that was a thing, did you? I didn’t. I had heard of the bacteria one, but to be honest, I didn’t know there was more than one, in fact there’s 3 types.
To the masses who don’t know, it’s from the conjunctivitis family…
What is conjunctivitis?
Conjunctivitis is an infection which affects the thin layer of tissue that covers part of the front of the eye and the inside of the eyelids (conjunctiva). It is not normally serious, and is sometimes referred to as pink or red eye.
There are three forms of conjunctivitis – bacterial, viral and allergic.
- Bacterial conjunctivitis
- Viral conjunctivitis
- Allergic conjunctivitis
Bacterial conjunctivitis
Which seems to be the one all the kiddies at nursery get, happens when people with weaker immune systems gain bacterial conjunctivitis. Children and the elderly are more at risk of a bacterial conjunctivitis. You’ll normally get pink eye with a yellow or green discharge.
Viral conjunctivitis
Which is what I had, is when you usually have a sore throat or recently had a cold. I didn’t have any sticky discharge just lots of water. I looked like I was constantly weeping. Oh and it was so itchy!
Allergic conjunctivitis
Allergic conjunctivitis is an inflammation that affects the thin layer of tissue that covers part of the front of the eye and the inside of the eyelids (conjunctiva). It is not normally serious, and is sometimes referred to as pink or red eye.
Thankfully the nurses and doctors at Deal’s outpatient unit gave me some antibiotic eye cream and my eye was back to itself in just a few days.
But seriously though, anything else the sick lords of autumn want to throw at us?
