I’ve been watching The Sinner on BBC Four the last few weekends, and I totally understand why it’s been so popular. The American anthology crime drama mystery television series, based on the novel of the same name by German crime writer Petra Hammesfahr, is currently airing on BBC Four. Spread across 8 episodes, featuring Jessica Biel as Cora Tannetti and Bill Pullman as the detective who wants to discover the truth.
I’m on episode 4 and I hate her parents. This dives back and forth, in and out of Cora’s childhood. Part of me 4 episodes in makes me understand even though it’s not really the truth, although maybe it is, who knows, but if her parents are anything to go by, her mum mainly, then yeah her fucking up and killing some guy in relation to that bloody song, meant that she stabbed him.
So, let me go back to the beginning. A woman, who seems normal, although a little troubled, goes to the beach with her husband and their son. She goes for a swim and out of nowhere, is gripped by a strange sensation. She returns to the shore, hugs her son, eats a pear and out of nowhere stabs a man to death.
Why? Does she know the victim? What are the connections and why do we constantly see wallpaper pulsating? All of it is connected to her parents, her mums obsession with blaming her for her sick sister’s illness and this song. It’s a constant question of what’s going on?
It has been the most-watched new cable show this year and I love how thrilling and confusing it is. Every time you think you’re near an answer, something comes around smashes it on the head.
